APPLETON’S TRADITION CONTINUES

A new chapter begins in Ripon’s heritage with the sale of its famous market square pie shop.

Established in 1867, Appleton’s is as synonymous to Ripon as the Racecourse and Cathedral, selling delicious handmade pork pies and meats to generations of loyal customers.

Appleton’s has been with the Gaunt family since 1920, and when current owner Roger was approaching his retirement the hunt for suitable successors began!

Perfect candidates were found in Anthony Sterne and Leigh Hughes, owners of successful local gourmet pie company i’s Pies. With a passion for pie making and a respect for the traditional methods used by Appleton’s, the venture was a natural step for the Yorkshire duo and Roger couldn’t be happier.

“I’m delighted to hand Appleton’s over to people who share my ideals – high quality ingredients, traditional methods and the utmost care in making our products. Manager Mike Schofield has spent time learning the ropes alongside me and I am happy knowing that the Appleton’s tradition will continue”.

Appleton’s will trade exactly as it has done for decades.

In times of supermarkets and globalisation it is refreshing to see a unique, independent, truly traditional business pass on its heritage to a new generation.
