Ecclesiastical Arts and Heritage Day at Ripon Cathedral
Saturday 01 May 2010 to Saturday 01 May 2010
Have you ever wanted to know how to make a stained glass window, or how to carve a gargoyle?
On Saturday 1st May, Ripon Cathedral holds its first Ecclesiastical Arts and Heritage Day. Visitors will be able to see displays and demonstrations of the various arts and crafts commonly associated with church buildings, such as stained glass, sculpture, silversmithing, calligraphy, furniture-making, embroidery, lace-making, floral displays, illuminated manuscripts, tours of the bell tower, and much, much more.
Throughout the day, which has been funded with the aid of a grant from ‘Awards For All’, experts will be showing off their skills and talking about their work. Many exhibitors will be offering ‘hands on’ activities so that visitors can have a go themselves. There will also be a wide range of craft activities for children, including brass rubbing, quill-writing, and even a chance to dress up in specially made vestments. “It’s a great opportunity to learn more about some of the fascinating crafts and skills that went into creating and decorating our amazing Cathedral”, said the Revd Dr Nicholas Buxton, who has organised the event.
The day lasts from 10 am - 3 pm, refreshments will be available, and entry is free, so bring the family – there’s lots for everyone to enjoy!
