Best of Ripon's buildings recognised at annual awards

Primrose Close - best new building and overall winner

GOOD design and craftsmanship were rewarded at a ceremony on Thursday as Ripon Civic Society presented its annual awards. This year saw a new award inaugurated in memory of the society's former secretary and chairman, Dr John Whitehead, to recognise the outstanding contribution of a project, group, organisation or individual.

The highly appropriate winner was Ripon Museum Trust, which Ripon Civic Society and Dr Whitehead were instrumental in setting up and of which he was chairman for many years.

The Civic Society awards are presented in a range of categories for new buildings and for restoration, for environmental improvement, for craftsmanship and the best shop front. Projects have to have been completed within the year that ended in April to be eligible.

From the winners the society chooses one overall winner to receive the prestigious Helen Whitehead Salver, given in memory of Dr Whitehead's wife. This was awarded for the new housing development at Primrose Close.

David Winpenny, co-chairman of Ripon Civic Society, said: "Our annual awards ceremony is one of the highlights of the year, and it gives special recognition to companies, groups and individuals who have contributed to the fabric and well-being of the city in a positive and sensitive way. We hope that the awards will encourage others to strive to make Ripon an even better place to live."
