Mayor urges city to come together

Friday 10 July 2009

RIPON must present a united front if Harrogate Borough Council is to help tackle some of the problems facing the city ...

That was one of the outcomes of a meeting which was attended by the Mayor of Ripon, Coun David Parnaby, and officials from the council.

The Mayor said: "There's not one clear message coming from Ripon and they asked that we work together to get one clear message coming from a joint-effort between Ripon City Council and Ripon City Partnership."

conflicting messages

He said Harrogate sometimes got conflicting messages from Ripon because many different organisations were contacting it with requests.

The Mayor said issues needed to be thrashed out between the partnership, which brings together a large number of community groups and voluntary organisations, and the council so they could speak with one voice to Harrogate.

differences

"We need to sort our differences out here, in the city, and then put forward a request for action on whatever it might be that comes from the city council and Ripon City Partnership," said the Mayor.

Along with Alan Skidmore, who was representing the city partnership, the Mayor showed Harrogate chief executive Wallace Sampson, director of development services Nigel Avison and council leader Coun Mike Gardner around Ripon to show them some problems which need to be addressed, including parking provision, the state of listed buildings and untidy or unmaintained areas.

priority

The Mayor said it was now a priority that Ripon City Council and Ripon City Partnership held a joint-meeting to identify ways of presenting a united front to Harrogate.

"It is something that must happen in the next two to three weeks," he said
