Move to end confusion over Westgate traffic flow

THE one-way system in Westgate should be returned to it's original direction on Monday next week says the chairman of Ripon's traffic action group.

His announcement is intended to end confusion after drivers were spotted last week going the wrong way down Westgate, assuming the traffic had already been reversed.

Complaints of a dramatic drop in business from traders saw the group agree to return to the original traffic direction in Westgate and lift the ban on cars turning right onto High Skellgate from Water Skellgate.

County Coun Bernard Bateman, chairman of the action group, says the delay with introducing the measures was necessary to make sure schools were aware of the changes before pupils retuned after half term.

"We couldn't have done it today because it would have caused utter confusion because a lot of pupils and parents come from outside Ripon," he explained.

"We anticipate the changes will be made on Monday next week (June 9)."

The alterations were originally put in place as part of a wider system to ease congestion during the closure of Coltsgate Hill.

The reversal on Monday will mark the abandoning of all but one of the original congestion-easing measures.

The group meets again on Wednesday this week.
